Meet My Youngest Client (12 weeks old)

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Little Henry is only 12 weeks old but he has been coming in to our fitness studio since he was only 6 weeks old. Usually we just plonk him in his car seat in front of the TV with one of the music channels while his mum Anna works out.

Anna is my longest serving personal training client by the way (nearly 5 years).  She also holds down a busy and demanding job as a consultant surgeon, but she still finds time to come in and train at our studio twice a week.

How’s that for dedication?

You could forgive her for using baby Henry as an excuse not to work-out now but she brings him in and usually he is good as gold but today he was being a bit grumpy so I ended up babysitting him and feeding him as his mum worked out.

Anna could use all this as an excuse but she doesn’t. She could say she doesn’t have the time, she is too busy with the baby her job is too stressful. Any number of excuses, but she doesn’t.

She ignores that little buy cheap orlistat online voice in her head that tells her she can’t do things. She just gets on with it.

You know the voice that tells you to stay in bed rather than get up for the gym or fit cap. Of course you do. We all have that voice…..

………………..Every single one of us

It’s when start to believe the voice that we have the biggest problems.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Huge Truth ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What is your inner voice telling you?

“I can’t lose weight”

“It’s no good I’ve tried everything

“I’m too old to exercise”

“I’m not fit enough to exercise in front of other people

“I’ll start my diet on Monday”

“Just one piece of (insert food here ) won’t hurt”

I don’t deserve to be happy (thin, meet someone, get a good job)

“I can’t give up coffee” (wine, bread, pasta, chocolate or whatever)

The inner voice is there to sabotage you and stop you getting what you want because it doesn’t want you to change. It wants you to stay right where you are, so please don’t let it. Get on top of it and take some action to get what YOU want, not your inner voice.

The Myth Of Willpower Part 1

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

What exactly is willpower and why is that some people appear it have it in abundance and others don’t have any?

As a coach who has helped a lot of people not only change they way they eat and give up bad habits I have had this conversation
with a lot of people and its also something that I discuss in my consultations with my clients here in Manchester.

Here is my take on it.

Will Power doesn’t exist, it’s a myth.

Let me give you a personal example.

My mum was a smoker 40 years, she must have smoked 20 cigarettes a day, every day I can even remember when i was a kid, (probably about 10 years old) she used to send me to the shops on my bike to get her 20 Lambert and Butler as that was her brand.

Anyway she knew what she was doing to her body wasn’t good but she couldn’t quit and she had tried many times. She had even tred
to quit using medication prescribed by her doctor but that just made her feel really ill.

“I cant quit” she used to tell me “I don’t have the will power”

Now my mum is obviously from a different generation and is a bit set in her ways. She doesn’t really understand the power of mindset and how you can change it. She also wasn’t willing to explore how to change it but something happened that changed her life and her mindset forever

It was Christmas just over 2 years ago and she had just come off tehe phone with one of my cousins.

He sister (my aunt) had just been taken into hospital suddenly and diagnosed witn lung cancer. iT was all very sudden and the pace of wht was happening was crazy.

She too had been a smoker for around 40 years. It was actually pretty advanced as well and the prognosis was that she only had
around 12 weeks left to live. It was a complete shock to everyone in our family.

She sadly passed away just 4 months later.

Now I’m not telling you this to scare you or put you off smoking if you you do smoke buy xenical malaysia because you already know all that stuff.
The reason why I’m telling you this is to explain the power that bad news can have on someone who self admittedly had no will
power.

Since the day of that phone call my mum has not smoked a single cigarette.

She quit right there and then.

How was this possible without will power?
Well firstly because will power doesn’t exist. Most people can achieve anything they want when they have a big enough reward or a big enough fear.

What had actually happened was that the the consequences of her actions just became very very real to her. She could see at close hand what would happen if she kept smoking.

It was an easy decision for her in the end. It didn’t require will power. She just quit. Instantly.

The connection in her brain between her actions (smoking) and the consequences (cancer and dying) became enhanced and closer to
her own future.

When we smoke, drink alcohol every night, eat processed food, take drugs or dont exericse or whatever else people do that harms their bodies it’s a slow process.

We might put on a lb here and there but the connection is way in the future. It’s so slow that we dont notice and
we think that “It won’t happen to me”

You might also try and convince yourself that you can quit, or eat healthy or exercise more in a years time or in 5 years when
you are older. What will actually happen is that the damage will be creeping up on you slowly and you won’t notice it

The chances are though that the damage may have already been done and it will be too late

My mum was one of the lucky ones, her sister wasn’t.

If you want to make changes without a massive shock to the system like this then I can help you with this.
It’s all about mindset and this is something that I teach all our fit camp members and my 1-1 clients.

Benefits of Stretching

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Flexibility varies enormously from person to person, however a lack of flexibility can seriously affect your posture and strength. Stretching is something that is often overlooked and we tend only to be concerned about our flexibility when we have issues such as stiff joints or when muscle shorten and become more susceptible to injury.

If we don’t stretch regularly (especially after exercise) then muscles have a tendancy to lose their flexibility. This means that when they are needed to perform an extreme movement, the muscle is less able to extend to the joints full range of movement and can lead to muscle tissue damage or tears.

Sports such as football (soccer) can be responsible for reduced flexibility in certain muscles. Footballers for example have notoriously tight hamstrings. This is known as adaptive shortening and this can also happen due to incorrect posture or due to immobilisations due to injury.

Benefits of Stretching and increased flexibility:

  • Increased range of movement
  • Reduction in muscle tension and increases in physical and mental relaxation
  • Reduction in Lower back and spinal problems
  • Decrease in muscle soreness after exercise (DOMS)
  • Reduction in risk of sprain and muscle tears
  • Better posture
  • Improvements in coordination due to creating greater ease of movement
